Panel to assess existing facilities

Delhi Government will form a committee of principals to look into the infrastructure and other technicalities requirements for public schools in the capital to start taking second shifts.

Education Minister Kiran Walia on Thursday said that the Government is in the process of constituting a committee to assess the efforts that need to be made so that private schools can run evening shifts in their building. The move comes after the Government recently gave an in-principle approval to schools in the national Capital to start a second shift under the same roof.

She further said that the proposal of running second shifts in public schools was discussed during the meeting of the Delhi School Advisory Board held in December last year. "It was decided that a committee must be constituted to look into the technical details. The proposal has been granted an in-principle nod," she said.

In order to ensure that the second shifts are treated as independent units, the staff will not be common for both the shifts. "New teachers will be appointed to impart education in the second shift in the schools and their qualifications will be checked thoroughly. To ensure that quality education is imparted in the evening shifts, the Government will constitute a committee comprising principals from different schools to assess the infrastructure facilities and technical details of the public schools (that run evening shifts). The final decision will be taken once the committee submits its report," she said.

The permission to run evening shift will be granted to schools which approach the Government. On the issue of nursery admissions, Walia refused to make a comment. She said that the Apex Court has offered freedom to the schools to come out with the admission notifications for this year.
