Pak Hindus stage protest, submit memo to UN

Demanding Indian citizenship, Pakistani Hindus, who are currently staying here, staged a protest outside the United Nations office in the Capital on Wednesday. They handed over a memorandum and apprised the officials about human rights violations in Pakistan.

Apart from the memorandum, they also submitted a copy of the letter seeking Indian citizenships.

Over 450 Pakistani Hindus left for United Nations Information Centre at lodhi Road from Bijwasan in South West Delhi around 10 am. The group was headed by Nahar Singh, who has been providing shelters to them, and a few leaders of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The organisation has been actively engaged in helping these refugees by providing foods, medicines and clothes to these troubled lives.

Singh said that UN officials have heard plight of the Pakistani Hindus and assured to send the memorandum to its headquarters in Geneva. He said the officials also indicated that a team might be sent to Pakistan to make a report on the torturous lives they have been leading there.

Demanding either citizenship or allow them to stay in India, the hundreds of Pakistani Hindus are relentless in proving their point that they are in no mood to return to Pakistan. “We will die here, but we won’t go back. We have come to the UN office so that they take notice of how our fellow countrymen are suffering in Pakistan,” said an agitated Jamna Devi who went to meet the UN officials along with Nahar Singh and three other members of her community.

“The Government has already extended their visas by another month, we are hopeful it will take some stand on this issue,” Singh said. On the occasion of Ram Navami, these Pakistani Hindus would join the procession which is scheduled to start from Ramlila Maidan on Friday.

“We were never allowed to celebrate festivals and practice our religion in Pakistan. Here we will worship God we believe in,” said Hanuman Singh.
