With the launch of new innovative knee navigation system OrthAlign, orthopedic surgeons are at ease that the new technique is a great help in achieving precise alignment positioning of knee implants to deliver an improved outcome.
This new advanced device offers precise alignment technology in a simple, palm-sized, single-use device that improves outcomes in Total Knee Arthroplasty surgeries.
Dr Rajesh Malhotra, IJProfessor of Orthopedics and Senior Joint Replacement Surgeon at AIIMS, Delhi, said, “Computerised assistance with OrthAlign is of great help to the surgeon. It helps in achieving precise alignment and positioning of knee implants to deliver an improved outcome. In a computerised surgery, surgeons can cut the bone at accurate angles and balance the soft tissue around the knee area.”
“The shelf life of an implant in a knee replacement procedure depends on how well the implant is aligned with the bone. Computer-assisted surgeries are not only more accurate but also safer. Additional benefits include shorter hospital stays, less blood loss and a reduced risk of post-surgery complications and need for TKR revision. This kind of advancement is also encouraging patients to overcome their fear and go under the knife to improve their quality of life “added Dr Malhotra.
“OrthAlign technology to improve alignment compared to traditional mechanical guides and to conventional CAS systems. The cases with severe deformity of tibia and femur have been successfully navigated with the Knee Align system,” said the doctor.
According to a study published in Journal of Arthroplasty, 94.9 per cent of OrthAlign patients had their knee replacement (femoral component) aligned within 2 degrees of neutral coronal alignment, compared to 92.5 percent of patients who received traditional computer-assisted surgery. They also performed better on overall mean mechanical alignment of the limb.
