Opp protests, but fails to present united front

The streets of national Capital reverberated with sloganeering against the Central Government’s demonetisation decision on Monday, with Opposition parties, including the Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the left holding separate rallies as a part of their nationwide protest call. They accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of pushing India into an “unprecedented financial turmoil”.

All left parties, including the CPI(M) and the CPI took out a procession from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar as part of “Jan Aakrosh Diwas”. The Congress carried out two marches to protest ban of high-value currencies which the party said piled up misery on common man. The AAP held a public dialogue at Connaught Place where party leaders slammed the Prime Minister for “enacting a black law” and alleged that corruption has gone up since the old notes were declared defunct.

“We believe the Prime Minister has brought the country to a standstill. He has imposed ‘deshbandi’ (holding country hostage) with ‘notebandi’ (demonetisation). 90 per cent of our people do cash transactions every day. Their lives have been hit quite hard. We are protesting against all this,” CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said.

Firing an anti-salvo at Modi, Congress leader Anand Sharma while addressing party workers at a demonstration, said people are dying due the impact of demonetisation. “`500 and `1,000 notes accounted for about 86 per cent of the currencies in circulation. Is he saying that 86 per cent of the money was blackIJ “Modi has denigrated the country and he must apologise,” the Deputy leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said. In the evening, the Delhi unit of the party marched to Jantar Mantar from Mandi House area beating utensils as a symbolic move to wake up the Government.

Meanwhile, the BJP Delhi Pradesh president has said it is true that the people of Delhi and country are facing difficulties due the demonetisation but trusting the resolve of Modi for the reconstruction of nation, the people and the traders all have cooperated with the Government

by continuing their business

as usual.

Upadhayay said Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal has always been saying that the people of Delhi have given him a majority of 67 seats, this is a divine miracle but on Monday the people of Delhi have completely rejected his call for Delhi Bandh.

He added Delhi has 100 per cent rejected the Bandh call and politics of Kejriwal over demonetisation and he should immediately resign if he has any morality left in him.
