The visitors to India Gate are in for a big surprise in just a few months. The magnificent 42-metre archway in the heart of the national Capital is soon going to be turned into a movie screen. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has decided to screen short 3D clips on one side of the India Gate. The movie clips shall chronicle Delhi’s history and give visitors a glimpse of all the city’s monuments.

Aimed to promote Delhi’s rich heritage, the movies will not be shown on any special screen. Instead, the central civic agency will use one side of India Gate’s wall to screen the movies. “We are working on a project of conducting a light show through three-dimensional projection mapping of India Gate. This will be projected only on one side of the monument,” said a senior CPWD official on condition of anonymity. Tenders will soon be floated for the project, added the official.

The clips shall be screened for just one minute and they’ll depict various monuments of Delhi. “The clips will be a minute long with around 50 clips to be projected on a single day. So people will get to see an hour long of a variety of clips. We chose India Gate because it is in the heart of the Capital and more importantly, thousands of people throng the place on a daily basis throughout the year. Apart from the monuments we also intend to convey the message of unity in diversity. Delhi is home to diverse cultures with people coming from all spheres and regions and it embraces each one,” said another official.

A proposal for the same was floated by the CPWD last year which was approved by the Ministry of Tourism on March 4 in the same year. On June 16 this year, the CPWD wrote a letter to the NDMC to get the necessary permission for the same. “We have received the letter from CPWD and we have given permission. In the entire arrangement for the 3D projection, there will be no permanent or semi-permanent structure involved. So there shall be no harm done to the monument or even its surrounding area. The work shall be executed by the CPWD,” said a senior NDMC official.
