In order to ease volume of passengers using the Delhi metro services during the peak hours, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has introduced discount system for the commuters.
Addressing the reporters, KK Sabharwal, Director Finance of DMRC, said, “There will be 10 per cent discount from Monday to Saturday for metro travellers who travel during the non peak hours such as between 6 am to 8 am, 12 am to 5 pm and from 9 pm onwards. Apart from these for travelers who use Smart Card, there will be an additional discount of 10 per cent.” Addressing the media, the DMRC officials explained that the idea behind providing discount to the metro commuters was to optimise the travelling time of passengers.
The main idea behind charging less from travellers who use the metro services during non-peak hours is to ease the congestion.
For instance, an elderly couple who plans to travel from West Delhi to South Delhi will be charged less if they travel in the non-peak hours. Apart from these features, the DMRC has also enlisted Sundays and three Government holidays i.e., January 26, August 15 and October 2 as special days where the hiked metro prices will be lowered.
“As opposed to weekdays, people travelling up to 2 kilometres will be charged Rs 10, for a length spanning 2 to 5 kilometres Rs 10, for 5 to 12 kilometres Rs 10 will be charged while for a distance ranging between 15 to 21 kilometres Rs 20 will be charged, Rs 20 will also be charged for a distance ranging between 21 to 32 kilometres, and Rs 40 for a distance beyond 32 kilometres,” said a senior DMRC official.
