NSUI to focus on women's safety, fee rationalisation

Ensuring peace, security and freedom, fee rationalisation across various colleges, a special nodal officer for students from the North-East, regular panchayat, an active grievance redressal cell and  safety measures for women in Delhi University, are some of the prominent issues on the National Student Union of India (NSUI) agenda for the upcoming Delhi University elections.

NSUI, Congress’ student wing, on Thursday released its manifesto for the DU Students Union (DUSU) elections. Facilitation of special buses and concessional metro passes, fight for mandatory hostel facilities, provision for counselling and mentoring for the student in stress, free English tutoring and ensuring equal opportunity for all, are among the issues listed by the NSUI in its women manifesto.

AICC in-charge for NSUI, Ruchi Gupta, said to take action against perpetrators of violence on the campus. “We will raise issues with appropriate authorities and use the office of DUSU to track violent incidents which needs institutional support for sorting it out. “We will ensure all-round facilities to the students. Besides, a charter would be prepared to protect students against victimisation by administration and faculty,” she said.

Firoz Khan, president of NSUI, said, “We will also ensure all the 50 odd DU colleges get equal opportunities in terms of exposure, seminars, guest lectures and placement opportunities. We will also oppose privatisation of colleges by giving them autonomy to things on their own.

Khan stressed on the building of hostels by University administration so as to provide affordable accommodation for outstation students.

NSUI’s major challenge is to beat the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) which has been sweeping DUSU polls for the past few years. Construction of new collages, affordable high-quality education and infrastructure, raising pending issues of SC/STs, minority and others.
