The Delhi Government on Monday gave in principle approval to upgrade Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology (NSIT) at Dwarka into a university. While briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit stated that the NSIT which was established in 1983 has emerged as a premier institute for education & research in engineering and technology and has carved a niche for itself nationally as well as internationally.
Presently, it is affiliated to University of Delhi for its academic programmes. It was granted administrative autonomy in 1986 with the direction to keep in mind the long-term goal of achieving the status of a university. It has a lush green campus sprawling over 145 acres of land in Dwarka Sector-3.
The institute has at present six under-graduate programmes in the areas of emerging technologies and three post-graduate programmes for M-tech degrees along with research programmes for PHD degrees in all engineering disciplines and applied sciences. “Cabinet has given in principle approval to upgrade the Institute into a State university. Further, its draft bill and operational details would be finalised at the earliest. The transformation of NSIT into a university will accelerate its growth and would expand further its high quality academic and research programmes,” Dikshit said.
The creation of NSIT University, Delhi would be in consonance with the spirit of recommendation from the National Knowledge Commission and would make a significant contribution towards making Delhi the technological Capital of India.
