The Delhi University has done away with the college option in its optical mark recognition (OMR) forms for admission in the academic session of 2014-15. Dean of Students’ Welfare Prof JM Khurana on Wednesday declared at the Open House Session that while students will be given the liberty to apply to as many courses as they want, they will automatically be made eligible to take admission in all the colleges that the courses are offered in. “This will save students from losing the opportunity to go to college because he/she only opted for select colleges while filling the OMR form,” said Khurana.
This means that the admission form would be the same as last year with no option for colleges. However, when the admission guidelines were introduced earlier this month, DU said students would be able to choose their colleges too.According to Joint Dean Students’ Welfare Malay Neerav, earlier decision for bringing back the college option was reconsidered in the interest of students.
He said, “When the college option was last there, the university received lot of complaints from students who had attained high marks but were denied admission in colleges because they didn’t apply to that college in the OMR form. Students tend to fill in options for colleges based on the cut-offs of the previous year.
Thus, students with high marks choose only top colleges and end up not getting into any because cut-offs increase. With no college option being there, this problem is taken care of once and for all. The students can now take admission into any college where their desired course is offered, as long as they meet the cut-off.”
There are 77 colleges, 86 academic courses and 16 faculties under DU and the process of admission to undergraduate programmes in the university will begin on June 2.
