The CBI on Friday got a new specialised laboratory, which will help the agency decipher and recover data from Apple and linux-based devices. The new lab, inaugurated at the CBI academy in Ghaziabad, is fully equipped with latest workstations and software to decode the digital information stored in such devices. The CBI had limitation in deciphering the digital information saved on Apple and linux-based devices as the training to the experts was imparted using Windows-based software.

The laboratory has been given unique software for cloning, imaging, password recovery, analysis of data and internet cookies recovery to expedite probe in the criminal cases, the experts said.

CBI Director Anil Sinha, who inaugurated the facility, addressed the newly-inducted sub-inspectors at the agency’s Training Academy. Talking to the mediapersons, the CBI Director said the agency has signed a MoU with IIM Bangalore, National law School of India, Bangalore and some other prestigious institute in India to impart the professional training to the trainees at the CBI Academy.

For training of national and International cadets, the CBI has developed an excellent lab here at the academy to retrieve data from every device.

“Today, we are expected to be specialists in the investigation of not only anti-corruption offences but also in investigation of conventional crimes, economic crimes, complex financial crimes and bank frauds, high-tech and cyber crimes and crimes having trans-national ramifications,” Sinha said. “Till now the lab was only equipped with software that dealt with android-based mobiles but now after the induction of the latest machines, the date can be retrieved from other platform-based devices also. Now a data as old as five year can be recovered. Both Indian and foreign cadets would be benefited by this lab,” Sinha said at the investiture ceremony of the 18th batch of 20 sub-inspectors, who joined after 32 weeks training.
