The first woman Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the country, Kiran Bedi on Wednesday said that attributing motive in the Sunanda Pushkar case would be premature till the investigators arrive at a definite conclusion.
In a series of tweets, she said, “It is unethical to attribute motives to Sunanda’s case till conclusive evidence is found by police and stands the scrutiny of courts”. “Registration of a case of murder does not conclude it to be a murder. It can go either way, depending on evidence open for scrutiny of courts”, she tweeted. “This is going to be challenging investigation as there is no eyewitness in this case. It’s a blind case as we cannot say as of now that it is an open-and-shut case as it may appear to many,” she said
When asked about her tweets, Bedi said that the case of murder was registered but it does not mean than any particular individual was guilty. The police can very close the case against the person who appears to be the prime suspect in the eyes of the people. Investigations are not carried out on the basis of emotions but it requires a horde of evidence for the prosecution to prove the guilt of the accused. “In my opinion, the case should have been registered much earlier. There are many questions and the same should have been addressed by now,” she told The Pioneer. These two vital aspects of the case the exact cause of death and the identity of the accused have taken too long for the police to establish. This will have a bearing on the case, she added.
