North civic body cell to monitor door-to-door garbage collection

In order to improve sanitation services, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) has set up a monitoring cell at Model Town that would ensure better monitoring of door-to-door garbage collection in Rohini and Civil lines zones.

The civic body has roped in a private company to collect garbage from the doorstep in the mentioned zones. The agency will have to upload online the daily report on sanitation. “The corporation has now decided to introduce GPS (Global Positioning System) Photography System in order to monitor the entire chain of waste-removal activities effectively,” officials said.

The technology involves use of mobile handsets equipped with GPS photographic system, used for taking pictures of the locations where the garbage is dumped before being transported to the landfill sites. "To start with, 40 mobile handsets have been procured and the instruments would be assigned to the members of supervisory team in both the zones. They would take pictures of each location -- dhalaos, bins or open sites -- at least once in 24 hours, when all the waste has been removed and the location is clean," said Vijay Praksah Pandey, Chairman of Department of Environment and Management Services (DEMS) in NMC.

He said a Unique Identification Code (UID) has been given to all locations where garbage is temporarily dumped.

"The zones have been sub-divided into clusters. The photographs would be uploaded on the corporation website as per the UID of the location. The entire process could then be monitored from the control room," Pandey added.

A centralised control room is also to come up in Model Town. Officials said trial run of the handsets and the control room has already begun. "The trial would be conducted for around a month before it is formally put into practice. It is likely to be started by the end of June," Pandey said.
