This is no walk in the park. A special drive by Noida Traffic Police against lawbreakers, more so transgressors, has seen a quantum rise in prosecution. In the last one month, Traffic Police has fined more than 4,000 vehicle owners for parking in a No Parking Zone.
The agency has earned revenue of over Rs 7 lakh through misdemeanour. On an average, more than 150 vehicles are being challaned daily even though the number used to stand at 30 earlier. According to Traffic Police officials, a core team of a dozen policemen formed has been instrumental in prosecuting motorists who park in non-designated areas.
The team visits main routes in the city and penalises the guilty. On Monday, 236 occupants were challaned while last week more than 200 vehicle owners were fined on a daily basis. A number of traffic violations in other cases too have registered a sharp increase since more than 50,000 motorists have been fined since January this year while last year the number was almost 40,000. The Department has also accrued more than Rs 1 crore this year, 30 per cent higher than the previous year.
A senior official said that they have hauled vehicles from the stretch between Rajnigandha and Sectors 12-22 intersections, between Sector 15 and the Botanical Garden, Sector 37 and Sector 63, crowded parts of Sectors 16, 18 and areas outside malls. “We are inspecting a particular area every day and towing vehicles parked in areas not designated as parking lots. Areas under Metro Stations in Noida for rogue autos are also being checked and parking streamlined,” said officials.
“Since vehicular volume is increasing, cases of traffic violations too are on the rise. Occupants encroached upon all available space despite authorised car parks. They even leave their vehicles in residential areas. Earlier we had a minuscule lot in Sector 18 for parking towed vehicles but now we have been allotted enough space near Botanical Garden Metro Station,” said MP Singh, Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Noida.
