Noida police launch 'Citizen Cop' to fight crimes

In order to rope in public to fight crimes, Noida police on Sunday launched a mobile application “Citizen Cop” so that people can report a crime or violation with or without disclosing identity. The application can be easily downloaded from Google play store at Android phone or i-phone.

The app also gives an important safety feature allowing the users to create a virtual boundary around them using GPS. If the mobile phone crosses the fenced boundary, an alert message is immediately sent to the registered contacts of family members.

For example, if a woman user has created a safe zone as Noida or particular areas lines dragged at Google map, the SOS will be sent once the person crosses the Noida border. The useful functionality aims to improve women and children safety.

A user can also register four mobile numbers of closed ones and send them an automatic message during any emergency. The message will be also delivered to police control room with locations.

Indore-based Citizen Cop Foundation (NGO) has developed this mobile application. They have previously launched this app in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh under association of respective police. In July 2015, the Jhansi police had also launched this mobile application.

The mobile application aims to bring police and citizens together to fight crime. The app has features like report an incident, call police, call administration, help me, my safe zone, towing vehicle search, emergency calls, etc.

Senior Superintendent of Police of Gautam Budh Nagar Kiran S said that that sometimes people do not inform police fearing they will be questioned.

“The Citizen Cop application does not disclose the identity of the sender. We hope the residents will cooperate in sending the messages with text, audio or video and informed to fight crime. They can also sent information like traffic violations. We assure that prompt action will be taken in a response time on all complaints,” the SSP said. “We would encourage the people to send audio or video clips as they provide evidence and location of the crime,” he added.
