With new mechanism in place, Gautam Budh Nagar Transport Department will manage to handle pile of applications for driving licences effectively.
The authority will now be issuing smart card embedded with microprocessor chip with all biometric data of the licence holder. A senior official said that the department merely issues 100 licences per day or 30,000 licences in a year but with the new system, we will be able to issue one lakh driving licences in a year.
The smart card will comprise photograph, biometric impressions of fingers, eye scan and signature. Hence, the applicant will have to be present while applying for the driving licence. The card will be dispatched on the same day to the applicant. Initially three counters have been opened out of which one counter has been kept reserve for senior citizens and women.
The department is likely to issue around 400 cards everyday. Making of duplicate card and renewal of traditional card will also be done accordingly.
According to a senior official of transport department, the process of issuing smart card driving licences will reduce possibility of touts as physical appearance is necessary while applying for the licence.
“As the process of making smart card has been launched in many districts of State, the need of hour is to start facility in Gautam Budh Nagar district also. With working of the system, applicants will be able to get their licences within a period of two to three days,” Rachna Yaduvanshi, Additional RTO, Gautam Budh Nagar said.
