The Capital would soon have road stretches with all green signals simultaneously. After the successful synchronisation of traffic signals at eight stretches, Delhi Traffic Police (DTP) is now conducting a survey for trials on other road stretches in the city.
For starters, these will include Ashram Road till Friends Colony and Deen Dayal Upadhayay (DDU) Marg, among others. To make the project a success, the stretches with all green signals will be equipped with signboards cautioning motorists to maintain a constant speed throughout the stretch and avoid changing lanes.
The stretches where the signal synchronisation trials have been successful include Mall Road, Patel Road, Pusa Rotary Road to Shadipur Depot, Subramania Bharti Marg, Mayapuri to Tihar, lodhi Road, Aurobindo Marg, Africa Avenue Road, August Kranti Marg, Ring Road to Panchsheel and Nizamuddin to Bhogal.
“On such stretches, the speed of a vehicle should average between 32 kph and 35 kph. Once the vehicle exceeds the speed, the driver will have to face red lights on the stretch. Signboards on speed limit to be adhered to and other rules will be installed at entry points to such stretches,” said ACP (Traffic) Anil Shukla.
In Delhi, the speed of vehicles is usually lower than normal. This can be attributed to the string of consecutive red signals, which act as a speed breaker. The city has several such stretches where motorists have to face red lights after barely covering 1.5 to 2 km.
To save motorists from facing recurrent red lights, Traffic Police had initiated a project to synchronise traffic signals on a trial basis on eight stretches. On these selected road stretches, vehicle owners can cross four to five signals without halting. According to DTP, the results of the trials have been satisfactory and soon the project will take off in a localised manner. After this, Traffic Police will explore the possibilities to convert other road stretches signal free. “A survey will be conducted soon to identify other roads,” added ACP Shukla. These will include Ashram and DDU Marg, among others.
