No insurance cover for Municipal school students

Tall claims of providing accidental insurance cover to the Municipal Corporation school students have turned out to be mere hogwash as the proposals remained confined to papers. Students of these schools, mostly ranging from low-class families, are unable to claim accident insurance cover and have been left in the lurch by the civic bodies, which have stopped providing insurance to the poor students.

The corporations, which are supposed to pay a premium of a meager 51 paisa per year under this scheme, have failed to provide it thanks to their financial crisis. “The corporations are in financial crisis hence it cannot support premium amount. We have been looking for a company, which could provide services on lower premium,” said a corporation Councillor.

Renu K Jagdev, Additional Commissioner (Revenue) on North Delhi Municipal Corporation said that the agency issued tenders in February and April but failed to finalise any of the companies.

“In February, the HDFC Insurance Company came forward with the rate Rs 1.10 but tender was not allotted as the company was the lone participant. In April, Bajaj Alianz and HDFC Insurance participated and the later had demanded Rs1.30 which was lowest. The tender was not awarded due to some reasons and now the agency is gearing for fresh tender,” the additional commissioner said.

Mukesh Goel, leader of Opposition in the North Corporation, said it is unfortunate that the students, who come under poor categories, are deprived of even such a small amount. The students are insurance-less while the ruling BJP is reluctant to pay heed to this issue.
