Motorists will not be able to purchase fuel in the Capital if they do not possess a valid Pollution under Control (PUC) certificate. With an aim to curb rising pollution level, Delhi Government is exploring feasibility to sell petrol and diesel to only those having the certificate.
This means that vehicles having valid PUC can get diesel or petrol from petrol pumps. For effective implementation of pollution control certificate, Transport Department is soon going to write to all the vehicle owners who don’t have PUC, to get anti-pollution check done. This has been decided after a Heads of Department meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar Srivastava recently. The Government has directed all petrol pump owners to equip with PUC facility.
Delhi having shifted to Euro-IV fuel, there was also an urgent need to upgrade the PUC norms. It is noted that a high power committee on air pollution, set up by lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, has suggested tightening of PUC norms for all vehicles.
The minutes of meeting of the HoDs accessed by The Pioneer, shows that Chief Secretary has directed Transport Department to explore possibilities to link PUC with sale of petrol and diesel across the city. “The possibilities should be explored to issue petrol and diesel to only those vehicles which have valid PUC certificate and it can be in the form of colour sticker or RFID (radio frequency identification),” the minutes of the meeting said.
Sources said that the Transport Department is soon going to write all vehicle owners who do not possess valid PUC. “At the meeting, it was also discussed that another option of collecting data from PUC certificate issuing unit and corroborating it from the vehicle registered with Transport Department may be explored in the defaulters should be penalised on expiry the PUC certificate automatically in case they fail to get PUC certificate on time,” said the sources. Chief Secretary has also directed to all departments to have PUC certificate on Government vehicles. Besides, all petrol pumps should have PUC facility preferably engaging a mechanic to fix the problems on the spot to reduce the pollution level within the prescribed limit.
