No brakes on Yamuna Expressway casualty

Rising fatalities on Yamuna Expressway don’t seem to hit a speed bump. Two persons were killed on the E-way on Sunday night. College grads Ravi and Naveen — aged between 20 and 23 —succumbed to their injuries while their three cohorts —Sudhanshu, Gopal and Vijay —suffered grievous injuries and were carted off to Kailash Hospital in the vicinity.

The friends — residents of Noida’s Sector 34 — were reportedly heading to Agra. They were tailgating a car in front when the vehicle they were in hit an E-way divider near zero point and did cartwheels. The impact hurled the occupants in the front seat of the car to the service lane on the E-way. Police said the incident took place around 4 am.

Brajesh Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police (Rural) of Greater Noida, blamed overspeeding saying, “The young men were driving recklessly. The bodies have been sent for an inquest and the next of kin informed. The injured are receiving medical attention. We have registered a case under appropriate Sections of the IPC and awaiting the autopsy to initiate penal action against the those responsible.”

In another freak accident on the E-way, a 35-year-old man was thrown off a speeding truck and crushed under its wheels when the driver of the truck skidded off the E-way after one of its tyres had a blowout. Chandrapal was a resident of Agra. The truck was headed to Greater Noida from Agra. Police have registered a case at Dankaur PS and the truck driver has been arrested.
