In an attempt to boost property tax revenue, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to launch an interactive portal on property tax system which would allow residents to query or apply for details regarding property tax. The North Corporation has also registered an impressive growth of Rs242 crore by collecting Rs613 crore in 2016-17 from Rs371 crore in 2015-16.
NMC Commissioner Praveen Gupta said, “This increase is due to various steps taken by the corporation such as digitisation of properties and Unique Property Identification Code (UPIC).” He said that these schemes helped the corporation in increasing the tax net.
“The advertisement department has also seen a boost in revenue from Rs16.97 crore in 2015-16 to Rs41.09 crore in 2016-17 as against the target of Rs36.22 crore. The new cluster policy that was implemented last year for outdoor advertising has helped in increasing the revenue. Further, the revenue of remunerative project cell has also increased from Rs38.91 crore in 2012-13 to Rs60 crore in 2016-17,” he said.
The Commissioner also said that the corporation aims at being financially self-reliant and set an example of good governance.
“The scheme is part of the digitisation program being implemented by the Corporation with an aim of widening tax base, digitisation of property tax records and maintaining it in electronic form, synchronisation of the scanned and digitised data with MCD online system and UPIC data,” said Gupta.
A senior NMC official said “The portal is a part of the e-governance measures taken by the NMC and would also have details on property tax deposited since 2004-05”.
“Taxpayers can know their dues as the digital platform would calculate the tax according to prevalent rates, schemes and rebates applicable.
“They can also request for modification in details including mutation or change of name. They would be able to also lodge complaint regarding false details about property,” he said.
Tax payers would be getting alerts and information about schemes or rebates through mobile text message or e-mail,” he said.
The Corporation official said the provision for inclusion or modification of property in property tax net has been provided as request for it came up during a survey of UPIC users.
