Acting tough against the errant parking contractors, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC), on Thursday, issued show-cause notices to 20 operators for indulging in malpractices. NMC Commissioner PK Gupta directed to issue notices after the parking attendants were found violating norms including unavailability of hand-held devices, fire fighting equipments and illegal parking.

After being directed by Gupta, the deputy commissioners of all zones were asked to ensure proper functioning of the parking lots. "Acting upon the instructions of the Commissioner, the zonal authorities inspected the parking lots in their areas and issued show cause notices to 20 parking sites located in Karol Bagh and Rohini zones of the Corporation. Besides, the license of parking lots can also be cancelled if the contractors do not come up with a satisfactory answer to the points mentioned in the notices," said a senior corporation official.

"The major parking violations in areas falling under the Rohini zone were in terms of use of hand-held devices, fire fighting equipments, complaint registers, uniforms of the staff and demarcation of the boundaries of parking lots by a yellow line. However, the parking lots in Karol Bagh zone mainly reported violations in terms of uniforms of parking attendants, displaying of boards containing details about contractors and use of hand-held devices," officials informed.

The NMC, as per the new policy, in March had allotted 74 parking lots to contractors through auctioning. The new policy makes it mandatory for the contractors to issue parking slips through hand-held devices to prevent overcharging, demarcation of parking lots to prevent illegal parking, attendants to be in uniform and information of contractors among others.
