Days after four people charred to death after they were trapped inside a narrow cloth laundering unit in Beedanpura area of Karol Bagh on Monday, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) has sealed 124 units in Ashoka park area of Karolbagh zone.
A senior NMC official said that the action was taken on the directions of Supreme Court appointed Monitoring Committee. "Many of the shops were found selling or producing tar oil causing environmental pollution," he said. He further said that these shops/ units were sealed on account of misuse of spaces and violations of provisions of Master Plan of Delhi- 2021.
The official said that120 units sealed on Wednesday while four shops were sealed on Tuesday, he said.
Many such units are still in operation running businesses in extremely small premises, which are mostly stuffed with goods, no ventilation and not equipped with prescribed safety measures. Most of the buildings do not have a sanction plan and have illegally added a third or a fourth floor to the already existing structure. Earlier this year, the licensing team of corporation had sealed 516 factories in Shahbad Daulatpur, Prahladpur and Pooth Khurd for running factories in non-conforming areas.
