Faced with acute shortage of parking space, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation has explored the feasibility of parking lots for accommodating nearly 30,000 vehicles. A survey of over 700 mixed land use roads and streets in the North Delhi areas was conducted by Delhi Integrated Multi-modal Transit System (DIMTS) and Chaitanya Projects Consultancy.
The agencies have found ample scope for conventional and multi-level parking lots in the North Delhi areas. These include prime commercial areas like Karol Bagh, Paharganj and Old Delhi as well as residential colonies like Model Town, Pitampura, Rohini and Shalimar Bagh among others. Besides, the corporation has already proposed 33 multi-level parking lots in its six administrative zones.
The civic body had engaged DIMTS and a private agency to survey the streets under its jurisdiction for developing parking lots in keeping with provisions of the Master Plan of Delhi 2021. While the DIMTS had surveyed Rohini and Sadar Paharganj zones; the remaining four zones — Karol Bagh, Civil lines, Narela and City zone were surveyed by Chaitanya Projects Consultancy.
North Delhi Municipal Commissioner PK Gupta has also written to the Delhi Development Authority, which is the land owning agency in most of these residential localities, to allot plots in colonies developed by it for construction of parking lots.
“In order to implement the MPD 2021, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation is required to create more and more conventional and multi-level parking lots to ease out the problem of parking in the city. In Delhi, a good number of colonies like Punjabi Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Ashok Vihar, Pitampura, Rohini and others have been developed by the DDA and handed over to the erstwhile MCD for maintenance. However, the ownership of
land in respect of vacant plots still lies with DDA. It is, therefore, urged to allot plots to the North Delhi Corporation for construction of parking lots,” Gupta said in his letter to the DDA vice chairman recently.
