After its successful venture in the field of technical education with its medical college, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) is in the process of opening its engineering college. The civic body will develop its engineering college with assistance from premiere Delhi Technical University (DTU) and Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology (NSIT). To begin with, the proposed engineering college will offer degree course in civil engineering and later other courses will also be introduced. The NMC has directed its officials to identify its unused properties for developing the institute and a detailed report is likely within a couple of months.

leader of House in NMC, Meera Aggarwal said the civic body also plans to include a chapter on the work system of civic bodies in the syllabus so as to train the budding engineers for suitable jobs in the Municipal Corporation. “We have directed the officials to prepare the feasibility report at the earliest. We will obtain funds from the Centre and the Delhi Government for the purpose and begin hiring faculty. like the medical college, the proposed engineering college will also be completed within six to eight months so that the session could be started from next year,” she said.

The idea has been derived from the Ahmadabad Municipal Corporation in Gujarat which runs its own medical and engineering colleges. Officials said a major share of seats in the college will be reserved for students from Delhi so that they will have an opportunity to study and work in their hometown. It is noteworthy that the NMC also reserved 85 per cent of seats for Delhi students in its medical college at Hindu Rao Hospital. The medical college had become functional in a record time of six months that brought accolades to the civic body.
