North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) has developed 316 compost pits to convert tree remains into manure under "Swachchh Bharat Mission" (SBM).
Preety Agarwal, the Mayor of North Corporation said that they have procured four shredder machines under SBM to use the leaves and branches left after pruning of trees as high-quality manure by cutting them further into smaller parts. It will reduce the cost of the corporation that goes into buying manure from external agencies.
"It is an important step taken by North Corporation under SBM. A large amount of leaves, grass and branches is remained after pruning of trees and by the help of new wood chipper machines, these fallen leaves, grass, shrubs, plants and branches can be cut into smaller parts and filled into composts pits to convert them into manure.
Even the manure produced in this is environment friendly. This would help in decentralized disposal of fallen leaves and branches in municipal parks by composting the matter and later using it as manure", the Mayor said.
She further said that the staff concerned with the Horticulture department has undergone a 10-day training in this regard.
The Mayor further said that two machines have been inducted in Rohini Zone, while one each has been given to Civil lines and Karol Bagh Zones. The process to induct wood chipper machines for other zones has been initiated.
