The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) has identified over 1,000 residential and commercial units evading property tax to the tune of over Rs 600 crore.

The civic body has warned of strict action against the tax defaulters if they failed to clear the dues. This includes sealing the bank accounts of these establishments as also attachment of properties. Rajesh Bhatia, chairman of the high powered committee on property tax, said these properties have been evading tax for the last several years. “The property tax defaulters include residential and commercial units like BSES, Indian Agricultural, Indane bottling plant and others,” Bhatia said.

Bhatia warned the property tax defaulters to pay their property tax on time failing which strict action would be taken against under the provisions of the DMC Act. This includes publishing the names of the defaulters in newspaper, placing boards with their names in localities, beating of drums (dhol) outside their homes, attachment of their accounts and auction of their properties.
