There is no hope for justice, according to the visibly heartbroken mother of December 16, 2012, gangrape victim Nirbhaya. On the eve of the third anniversary of the incident that shook the nation, the mother urged the Government not to release the juvenile convict.
Recalling the grim incident, the mother said, “There is no age to commit the crime but when it comes to punishment, ‘age-factor’ comes first. We don’t want the juvenile to be released but very little is in our hand. We can only plead as we can’t change the laws. There is a need to assess his (rapist’s) mindset to ensure that he does not attack another girl after being released like he had attacked my daughter .”
She said, “With each passing day her memories get more intense. We are deeply uspet as we have failed to get justice for her. No one can imagine our pain. My sons (Nirbhaya’s younger brothers) remember her. We wish she was alive as she was our hope. She was always willing to help us out. We have shifted to a new residence and are struggling to make a new beginning. What worries us the most is the report that the (juvenile) — the killer of our daughter — is to be set free despite his heinous crime.”
Appreciating the support that the family got from society and the neigbhours, she said, “There are many people who support us and are ready to stand by us. After she (Nirbhaya) left us, we four (father and two sons) console each other and try to move on. However, it has not worked,” said the mother.
She proudly said she had no shame to talk about her daughter. “Those who committed the crime should be ashamed, not me. Neither will I hide my face nor my name from anyone.”
