The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has removed murder charge against the four accused persons charged for murdering Nido Tania, the son of a Member of legislative Assembly (MlA) of Arunachal Pradesh. Tania was allegedly beaten by four persons, identified as Farman, Pawan, Sunder and Sunny Uppal. They were arrested on the charges of murder under Section 302 of IPC by Delhi Police. The lopsided probe conducted by Delhi Police deserves to be examined afresh and senior officers need to provide an answer to the faux pas.
The murder charge was removed by the CBI that was tasked to investigate the case on the intervention of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The CBI charged the four accused persons under Section 304 of IPC that is applied for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The CBI, while filing its chargesheet before the designated court, pressed charges of culpable homicide, destruction of evidence, illegal confinement, common intent and offences under the SC/ST Atrocities Act. The three juveniles involved in the crime will face charges before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB).
Nido Tania, the 19-year-old son of the Arunachal Pradesh MlA, was targeted and badly beaten by a crowd in a busy lajpat Nagar area of South-East Delhi. The incident that happened on January 29 this year caused wide consternation as the defenceless student was handed out a severe thrashing by the assailants. To make matters worse, local police and the police control room played a bizarre role. Instead of taking the badly injured to a hospital, they dropped him back at the place where he was attacked by the mob. He was again dragged and beaten black and blue that resulted in his death. The tragic episode has shocked the country and shamed the Capital.
