Two minor offenders, accused for attacking 19-year-old Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Tania, were released and were sent on one-year probation by a Juvenile Justice Board on Wednesday. They were released on probation and were asked to pay a fine of Rs10,000 each after being convicted under various charges dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, wrongfully restraining and common intention.
During the probation period, the board will monitor their conduct. The defence counsel of minor, Vishesh Raghav, said he has requested board to release his client on probation as they were not involved in any other criminal offence.
The chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in May 2014 had named seven people, including three minors, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder of Tania. Four adults are being tried in the trial court while one minor is on run.
Nido died in a hospital on January 30, 2014 a day after being beaten up by several shopkeepers in South Delhi’s lajpat Nagar area following an argument over his appearance and clothing.
After a detailed investigation, the CBI concluded that seven people — Farhan, Pawan, Sundar, Sunny Uppal and three juveniles —were involved in the assault on Tania that led to his death.
The case was transferred to the CBI from the Delhi Police for further investigation after the victim’s parents met then Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, demanding speedy justice.
