New supplementary exam rules leave students' future at stake

The amendment to the rules regarding the supplementary exams at the Delhi University (DU)'s law Faculty made last year is a cause of worry for the law students who are now in their final semester. The students have alleged that the change in rules for appearing in supplementary exam will adversely affect their future career prospects.

llB course is of three years consisting of six semesters with provision for appearing in supplementary to clear backlogs. It gives student an opportunity to appear in the paper which s/he is not been able to clear in the very first attempt.

However according to the recent change in rules for appearing in the supplementary exam, a final year students after the end of regular term examination can appear in supplementary exam only in papers of penultimate V and last VI semester that have not cleared in the first attempt.

However for any paper of I, II, III and IV semesters that is not cleared and carried up to the last year, the student would have to wait for at-least six months to one year to clear the same by taking respective examinations with the regular examination held at the end of each term that too in his or her capacity as an ex-student.

Delhi High Court lawyer Mohit Kumar Gupta, who is an ex-student of DU law Faculty, said for applying at several places, one has to clear llB in the very first attempt and doing away with supplementary examination is a detrimental case of administrative misadventure.

Vikas Bhaskar, III year student of law Centre-II, Faculty of law at DU, said “I am not questioning the policy but only that it is implemented now, retrospectively from year 2013-14. You cannot do whatever you want anytime and such changes are arbitrary and malafide.”

Dean law Faculty Ved Kumari cannot be contacted despite several attempts. However an Academic Council (AC) member said the issue needs to be revisited as the career of hundreds of students is at stake. He said that he will raise the matter in AC meeting.
