New station to bring Metro closer to ITO; 3 cross-over facilities in the offing

One of the most congested intersections, ITO, will soon get three cross-over facilities with the upcoming Metro station in the area. To feed the station, as part of the upcoming Kashmere Gate to Central Secretariat Corridor, the Delhi Metro is constructing a subway in front of the Delhi Police Headquarters at Indraprastha Marg that will facilitate easy cross-over facilities for scores of pedestrians.

"The subway, after construction, will have entry and exit points near the Delhi Police Headquarters and the building of the Institute of Engineers," said a spokesperson with Delhi Metro rail Corporation (DMRC). As part of the upcoming ITO station, another subway will come up at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, while the existing subway at the Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg will also be connected to the station. The subway is being constructed using the 'Box Pushing' technology, below the busy ITO intersection roads (Indraprastha Marg).

The construction work began in June this year and will be finished by the end of September. The DMRC will monitor the condition of the roads through various types of instrumentation methods, like precise levelling studs on the pavement areas and settlement markers, during the entire construction period.

The ITO Metro Station is expected to be one of the busiest stations, catering to numerous offices in its vicinity. DMRC has pegged a ridership at 40,000 passengers daily. The under-construction station will have six entry and exits points. Apart from ITO, the technology will also be used for the construction of subways as well as entry or exit structures of Metro stations at Dabri Mor, Panchsheel Park, Chirag Delhi, Nehru Place (on Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden corridor) and Bhikaji Cama Place (on Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar corridor).
