New DCW chief plays down row

Amid tussle between the lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, newly appointed Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Swati Maliwal has sought time from Jung to clear the air about the technicalities,

While Jung cancelled her appointment stating that his approval had not been sought, Maliwal played down the issue and is still continuing office. “So far I have not received anything in written regarding this issue. I have only received a letter of appointment from the Delhi Government on Monday asking me to assume office,” said Swati Maliwal.

“I think this is a minor technical glitch because what is being said is that the file (my appointment) was not sent to l-G’s office. I think it will get resolved. It is not a very major issue,” Maliwal told The Pioneer.

Meanwhile, Maliwal also visited city’s infamous GB Road red-light area, as per her schedule. “We met around 400 sex workers. The condition of these workers is really bad,” she said.

Thirty-year-old Maliwal, who took over as DCW chief two days back, said, “We totally respect the constitutionality of the l-G’s office and will abide by any communication from him.”

“In case the Delhi Government decides to withdraw the notification of my appointment, we will abide by it,” she said, hoping that the l-G will give his approval as “my credentials speak for” eligibility for the post.

Maliwal is wife of Aam Aadmi Party leader Navin Jaihind and has been an advisor to Kejriwal on public grievances and handles his Janta Samwad. She has been associated with the AAP chief since India Against Corruption (IAC) days.
