NDMC's lightbulb moment

Published on:

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Friday gifted lED bulbs to 31 MPs, days after a call by Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the people to switch to these light sources to conserve energy.

The light-Emitting Diode (lED) bulbs were presented to the MPs who attended the Standing Committee meeting of the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD).

“NDMC chairman Jalaj Shrivastava gifted two lED bulbs each to 31 MPs who attended the meeting,” said a senior NDMC official.

The civic body, which made news last year for distributing sweets worth Rs94 lakh to its employees on Holi, will this year be distributing lED bulbs instead for the festival.

“We will be distributing three lED bulbs each to 12,000 employees on Holi. Average usage of each household

is estimated to be five bulbs,” said Shrivastava.

Modi had launched a scheme on Monday for distribution of lED bulbs under the Domestic Efficient lighting Programme (DElP).

Describing the lED bulbs as a prakash path (way to light), Modi had added that gifts such as diaries and calendars on New Year should be replaced by presents of such bulbs.

Under DElP, lED bulbs will be provided to all domestic consumers at an initial payment of Rs10 each, recovery of which will be done in 12 months from their electricity bill.
