NDMC to upgrade CP's subways, escalators

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is going to upgrade the deteriorating condition of subways, tunnels and covering of escalators in the Connaught Place area by enhancing it with improved design and providing better facilities by installing CCTV cameras to increase the security of people.

“In the first phase, the tunnels and subways will be renovated in a new design with the installation of CCTV cameras which will be monitored by NDMC officials 24/7,” said senior NDMC official.

In next phase, old and damaged escalators will be revamped and replaced with the new ones. Besides security, we are also aiming to beautify the city with improved makeover,” said the official.

With this move of the council, it expects to curb the criminal incidents that take place owing to the poor lighting in subways and lanes. Rag-pickers, pick-pockets and vagabonds have been often involved in robbing the pedestrians. There was time when people used to feel scared while passing through the tunnels and subways due surfeit of drug peddlers, pick-pockets, rag pickers and vagabonds.

“With lighting arrangements in the dimply lit segments, we intend to bring down the crime rate especially in the Connaught Place area” said the official.
