NDMC cracks whip on flats sublet by allottees

Cracking the whip on government employees who sublet their allotted homes, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to float a scheme for identifying the sublet flats. Under this, the Council has asked complainants to inform about any such flat and gain allotment of the same.

The subletter, on the other hand, will not only face eviction but will also have to pay a major penalty.

Government flats are allotted to employees on certain terms and conditions which have to be abided by them. The terms of allotment bar any kind of subletting (renting) of government accommodation by its allottees. However, scores of allottees out of around 3,000 flats meant for the employees of NDMC have been given on rent by them for earning an extra buck.

“Whoever informs us in writing about a sublet unit and if the complaint is found to be correct, the complainant will be allotted the same house, if s/he is entitled for the same. Verification of the complaint will be done by the municipal housing department through an independent mechanism,” said an official, explaining the process of lodging a complaint.

Acting stern on the errant allottees, the NDMC has decided to take strict measures if anyone is found to be violating the terms of allotment. “The subletter of the flat will face eviction as well as major penalty proceedings with a maximum punishment up to removal from service,” said the official. During the period between final notice of eviction and actual eviction, the occupant will be charged market rent, which will be deducted from his/her salary, he added.
