North Delhi Mayor Preety Agarwal on Wednesday inspected Narela-Bawana waste-to-energy plant being run by North Delhi Municipal Corporation and asked officials to process maximum amount of garbage in the plant so that the premises don’t turn into a landfill site.
She also directed them to increase the efficiency of the plant from present 70 per cent to 80 to 90 per cent by processing more garbage and generation of more electricity than is being done at present. At present 12 MW electricity is being generated by processing 1,200 MT of garbage.
Mayor Preety was briefed about working and efficiency of the plant which is first-of-its-kind and integrated facility for waste management. She also sought a report from the officials of north Corporation to know whether garbage of Narela Zone can be dumped directly at this waste-to-energy plant to reduce the transportation cost. She further directed the officials concerned to encourage citizens to segregate the waste they generate through awareness programs as it helps in efficient waste management.
The Mayor also inspected Maitri research and development foundation’s Mid-Day meal kitchen at Budh Vihar which provides Mid-Day meal to about 32,000 students in Corporation’s school in Rohini Zone. She inspected the quality of food items stocked in the store room and understood the process of mid-day meal preparation.
The Mayor said the Corporation should take lesson from the Ghazipur incident and asked the officials for working towards making Delhi a landfill-free place. Tilak Raj Kataria said that capacity of the plant would be increased to 4000 MT per day so that 24 MW of electricity can be generated.
