With the University Grants Commission (UGC) sending in their recommendations early on Wednesday, for the restructuring of courses for the current batch under the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP), the Delhi University finally set the ball rolling on Thursday evening. The Assistant Registrar of the university issued a letter to all the heads of courses to start the process of restructuring. According to the letter, the heads were advised to conduct an emergent meeting of the Committee of Courses to take a decision on the matter.
The Principals’ Committee set up to look into the smooth transition from FYUP to the three year semester system sent in their recommendations following the UGC’s letter late evening on Wednesday evening. However, no intimation from the university was received by any of the faculty members, course heads or Academic Council members by Thursday evening.
Nonetheless, the letter that game in late evening got everyone in action with most faculty members beginning their work immediately. The university instructed them to go by the academic schedule recommended by the Principals’ Committee. With the process having now taken off, the academic session for 2014-15 is likely to begin as per schedule which is on July 21. According to university officials, things would have worked faster if the UGC had responded in time. “We were waiting for the UGC’s recommendations all this while. In the several letters written by the UGC to the university, we were categorically told that only the standing committee would take a call on the restructuring process for the current FYUP batch. Therefore, the delay has taken place. Otherwise, we would have long back reconstructed the courses,” said a university official.
However, since the process has now started, university officials on Thursday said that the Academic Council meeting may be held in a day or two.
