Naidu visits grieving family, offers relief

Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari on Monday paid a visit to the family of the 32-year-old e-rickshaw driver who was mercilessly beaten to death by a group of 20 to 25 youths outside the GTB Nagar metro station on Saturday evening.

The Union Minister gave a cheque for Rs50,000 from his personal account to the kin of Ravindra Kumar, who was beaten up for objecting to two Delhi University students urinating on the roadside.

Apart from the amount, the BJP State president has promised a job to the youngest brother of the victim, Azaad. Meanwhile, the Delhi Government too announced a compensation of Rs5 lakh to the kin of the e-rickshaw driver. The PM Narendra Modi also announced ex-gratia relief of Rs1 lakh.

The Union Urban Development Minister accompanied by Delhi BJP president also visited the spot outside the GTB Nagar metro station where Ravindra Kumar (32) was beaten to death by a group of 20 to 25 youths on Saturday evening.  “Naidu gave a Rs50,000 cheque from his own account to the wife of the deceased as an interim relief. We have also talked to the Commissioner of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation for providing a job to his younger brother,” Tiwari said.

Receiving the cheque from the Union Urban Development, Rajesh, brother of the victim, said, “My brother Ravindra was a simple man. He just raised his voice against the filth that those youngsters were creating.”

The Minister has also directed the police to speed up the manhunt and arrest the  assailants of Ravindra, whom he described as a promoter of Swachchh Bharat.

Tiwari said, “The irony is that the spot where the e-rickshaw driver was beaten to death is hardly a few metres from a Sulabh Shauchalaya complex.

It is perhaps the first case where someone has given his life in the country for promoting cleanliness and sanitation and we are committed to support Ravindra’s family.

“Earlier in the day, Naidu had asked Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to expedite the investigation in the case.

“Sad that an e-rickshaw driver was beaten to death for stopping two people from urinating in public in Delhi. He was promoting Swachchh Bharat,” Naidu had tweeted.

Ravindra, who lived in a slum near the GTB Nagar Metro Station, had got married last year. Just nine days before he was murdered he had celebrated his first wedding anniversary. His 19-year-old wife Rani is three months pregnant.
