Murder suspect dies in custody, probe ordered

A person, arrested in connection with the murder of a CISF constable and his wife, was on Sunday found hanging in the toilet of a police lock-up in the city. While a fellow prisoner has alleged that the victim was tortured to death, police ruled out the charges, saying he committed suicide.

Victim Vineet Sharma, brother-in-law of the slain constable, was arrested by Indirapuram police along with one more person Narendra. SSP Nitin Tiwari ruled out allegations of custodial death, saying that Vineet committed suicide and the post-mortem report will bring out the truth.

Stressing that a thorough inquiry will be conducted into the matter, Tiwari said no departmental official will be spared if found guilty. Narendra, however, has alleged that they were given third degree torture and Vineet died of electric shocks. Constable Suresh Kumar Sharma and his wife Babli were found dead in the CISF staff quarters on April 24. The father of the victim alleged that his son was tortured by the police during his three days illegal detention due to which he sustained grievous injuries that led to his death. However, the police claimed that the victim hanged himself in the lock up with a torn blanket.

According to the police, Vineet (30), a resident of Hathras in UP, was picked up by the police in connection with the robbery-cum-murder case. Suresh was the constable in CISF who along with his wife Babli was found dead in his residence at the CISF complex on April 24. The police claim that the couple was murdered after a robbery was committed in the house three days ago on April 21, 2013 but the incident could not come to light because both — wife and husband were the lone resident in the house and none of them could survive to bring the incident to light. Both were murdered when they posed a resistance in the crime of robbery.

During investigation the police found Vineet’s involvement in the crime and detained him and one Narendra (28) from Aligarh. The police recovered a motorcycle, a gold chain and a ring of the deceased couple from his possession. Vineet was to be produced before the court on Sunday but in the wee hours he tore the blanket, made it a cord and used to hang himself from the window bar. At 5:30am when the security guard peeped inside the lock up, he found the suspected hanging. He was immediately rushed to the Pushpanjali Crosslay Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

“His body has been sent for post-mortem, family has been informed whom we are expecting to reach some time in the evening. A departmental inquiry has been ordered into the entire incident along with a magisterial inquiry has been recommended to the district magistrate,” said SSP Nitin Tiwari.
