In the aftermath of a massive fire which engulfed a five star hotel in Dwarka on Friday morning, Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s mobiles which were left behind in his hotel room during evacuation were recovered, police said on Sunday.
According to a senior police officer, a fire operator from the Delhi Fire Service was detained and later released. He claimed that he was not aware that the three mobile phones belonged to Dhoni and had intended to return the same to the owner.
“It was an error of judgment on the part of the person who took the phones. He and a couple of other staff had entered the cricketer’s room to sanitise it. On Friday morning, the 46-year-old fire operator took away the phones without knowing their ownership. When the police contacted him, he accepted and handed over the devices to us,” said a senior police official.
Police said that Dhoni had earlier filed a complaint alleging that his three mobile phones were stolen during the fire in the shopping arcade of the hotel on the first floor that spread to the rooms of ITC Welcome Hotel on March 17. Dhoni, along with the Jharkhand cricket team of which he is the captain, had on Friday escaped unhurt after the fire broke out.
In his complaint, the cricketer alleged that he had left his phones in the hotel room when he had gone for breakfast downstairs. later, when his staff went to pack his things, the mobile phones were missing from the room.
Based on which, a case under Section 380 of the IPC was registered at the Dwarka South police station.
