In order to ensure accident-free traffic movement on the city’s roads, lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung directed the Special Task Force to conduct a joint survey of all the accident-prone areas and rectify the shortcomings within two weeks.
To assess the progress, a review meeting will be organised in the first week of March. The meeting with the task force comprising the officials from various authorities — including transport, Delhi Traffic Police, Public Works Department (PWD) and NDMC was conducted to plug the deficiencies in the traffic management in the city and the lack of coordination among the various agencies.
Delhi Traffic Police, which gave a presentation during the meeting, had identified 128 accident-prone spots in the city. “The presentation not only focused on the spots vulnerable to accidents but various other road safety issues such as road markings, foot over-bridges, central verge on the roads, railings, junction improvement, pedestrian crossover facilities and parking issues,” said Additional Commissioner of police (traffic) Anil Shukla, who provided an analysis of the fatalities over the last ten years in the city.
The l-G further said that all the bottlenecks should be removed within a month and substantial progress must be achieved within one month. Jung also emphasised that enforcement of lane driving on Delhi roads should be ensured. People of Delhi need to be trained and sensitized. Drive against drunken driving should be launched vigorously. The issue of illegal parking was also discussed in the meeting and the lG directed the traffic police to crackdown heavily upon illegal parking.
