After being declared brain dead, the mother of a 20-year-old man donated all his organs to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Tuesday, a day before the World Organ Donation Day.

The boy, a resident of Gonda in Uttar Pradesh, came into the Trauma Centre after he suffered a severe head injury. The boy was brought in on Saturday and declared brain stem dead on Monday. The hospital officials from the ORBO Department approached the boy’s mother after that.

“We counselled the family for organ donation after the boy was declared brain stem dead. His organs were in good condition and could save a lot of lives. After deliberation, the mother and two brothers of the deceased took the brave decision and consented to donate his organs for the benefit of patients waiting for organ transplant. His heart, liver, kidneys, eyes and bones were donated,” said Rajeev Maikhuri, organ transplant coordinator.

AIIMS will be celebrating Organ Donation Day on Wednesday by conducting an awareness campaign along with an NGO. The celebrations will carry on in the evening as well as Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan will grace the occasion.

Meanwhile, AIIMS celebrated 20 years of their facility of heart transplant on Tuesday. AIIMS was the first to conduct a heart transplant in India on August 3, 1994 which is now known as National Heart Transplant Day. Today, after 20 years 16 hospitals in India conduct the heart transplant surgery.
