The Delhi Police officials are finding it tough to prevent crimes against women since a majority of the incidents take place within the confines of the four walls of the house.

Statistics compiled by the Delhi Police clearly shows how out of 1,559 rape cases registered in 2013, 1,347 occurred at home. The Delhi Police officials revealed it becomes near impossible to prevent such crimes against women as they continue unabated within the confines of the house. Further profiling of sexual offenders too has established the involvement of 96 per cent people known to the victims.

The statistics compiled by the Delhi Police show that in cases of rape and molestation, the place of occurrence has been homes and JJ clusters. Out of the 1,559 cases of rape reported in 2013, 1,347 occurred at home. Out of the 3,347 cases of molestation that were registered in 2013, 1,445 cases took place inside homes.

Moreover, 279 cases pertaining to outraging the modesty of women/girls took place in households even though 309 of such cases happened on roads. The Delhi Police had earlier revealed that in 96 per cent of the cases the accused were known to the victim which often makes it difficult to preempt crime. The victims oftentimes do not divulge exact details as they fear retribution and damaging the family’s pride and honour.

A senior police official said that loss of conscience and degradation of moral values are the main reasons behind violence against women. The role of police in such cases is greatly diminished as the perpetrators are within the family fold and safely ensconced. Still 72 per cent accused in rapes, 78 per cent accused in molestations and 82 per cent accused in outraging the modesty of women were arrested within a week.
