More to biogas than hot air

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has started an eco-friendly biogas power generation at its sewage treatment plant (STP) in Kondli, making it the third STP to have such facility. According to DJB, its total gas-based power generation at the three STPs has now gone up to 40,000 kWh per day. “DJB has started generation of biogas power from its 45 MGD sewage treatment plant at Kondli. The plant has started producing 10,000 kWh per day which will increase further in the coming days,” DJB official. Apart from Kondli STP, the biogas based plants have also been commissioned at Okhla and Rithala, the official added.

“At Okhla STP, 12,000 kWh and at Rithala STP 20,000 kWh are being generated daily,” said an official, adding that presently 30 per cent to 35 per cent of the power demand of these three STPs is met from the electricity generated from its biogas-based plants. He said they have plans to install biogas based power generation in all its STPs wherever technically feasible. “In the coming days, power generation will start in sewage treatment plants at Pappan Kalan, Nilothi, Yamuna Vihar and Delhi Gate. DJB has set the target to increase the power generation capacity to 70,000 kWh of power per day from its gas-based plants by the end of current year. This will save at least Rs20 crore per year in the power bill of the DJB,” said DJB official.
