Karawal Nagar locals go on a rampage as girls play truant from school, 4 cops hurt

The SHO of Karawal Nagar and four other policemen were injured after a group of protesters turned violent in North-East Delhi’s Karawal Nagar area on Tuesday morning. The tipping point of anger was found to be two girls from the area playing truant from school and visiting two boys in the neighbourhood.

On Tuesday, locals saw the two minor girls commingling with boys instead of attending classes at a Government school. Agitated, the locals thrashed the boys. A PCR call was made. Police officials reached the spot to find locals venting their ire and coercing the girls to come out. Several bikes were also burnt and police vehicles were damaged by the locals.

Jasoda Singh, SHO of Karawal Nagar, intervened to save the girls as the mob chucked stones. Four other officers also sustained injuries during the skirmish. The girls were handed over to their parents.

locals alleged that a prostitution ring was being run in the area and despite complaints to police, no action had taken place. However, police officials denied any such complaint being made saying the girls had simply gone to meet their friends of their own volition and were not engaged in anything eyebrow-

raising. “A case under appropriate sections has been registered at Karawal Nagar PS. Ten people have been arrested,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) RA Sanjeev.
