Suspecting a group of three youths to be thieves, a group of unidentified slum dwellers located near the Azadpur railway tracks allegedly beat them up, leaving one dead and one with critical injuries. 19-year-old Deepak died after he was brutally thrashed by the mob with stones and sticks. One of the three youths managed to escape unhurt.

The incident happened on Saturday night near the Azadpur railway tracks where three youths, all in their early twenties and working at a local dhaba at Netaji Subhash Place were walking towards the Azadpur Mandi. Deepak along with one Nepalese national Suresh and Ashok were returning.

The trio had crossed the backside of the Fortis hospital and was walking on the railway tracks when a woman from the nearby slums saw them. Assuming them to be thieves, she called out other slum dwellers.

The group of five to six men got into a heated argument with the three youths. The youths defended themselves and tried telling the mob that they work at a dhaba but the angry mob took out stones from the railway tracks and started beating them.

While Ashok managed to free himself from the clutches of the mob, the other two Suresh and Deepak were brutally beaten up.

Meanwhile, the local Railway Police was informed and rushed the two injured to the Babu Jag Jivan Ram hospital where Deepak was declared brought dead while Suresh had sustained injuries.

Police sources said that as per the version of the injured, the mob attacked them with sharp edged object and one person out of the mob stabbed Deepak.

Police said that they have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code at the Subzi Mandi Railway police station. DCP Railways, Parvaiz Ahmed said, “We have registered a case. No arrests have been made so far.”
