A 17-year-old girl, who had gone missing on Tuesday last, was found dead on Thursday morning in the Mayur Vihar area of East district.
As news of the recovery of her body spread, angry parents, relatives and locals gathered outside Mayur Vihar Police Station and protested against police inefficacy. The girl, identified as laxmi, was a student of Class XII. Initial investigations by police indicate suicide but police are awaiting the post-mortem report to get a clearer picture.
According to police, the incident was reported on Tuesday afternoon. The body of the minor — a resident of Trilokpuri — was recovered by police near a drain in New Ashok Nagar area. Her parents had filed a Missing Person Report on Friday after the girl did not return home from school. Police later received a call about the body of a girl being found in Mayur Vihar area. Her parents, along with police, reached the spot and identified the body with the help of a tattoo which bore her name.
The victim’s mother claimed that they never had any rivalry with anyone.
“The tragedy is that my son was also found dead at the same spot around a decade back,” she added.
laxmi’s relatives and locals staged a protest outside the Police Station demanding strict action against the perpetrators. The protestors later dispersed after senior police officers promised action.
Police sources revealed that the girl had no external or internal injury marks.
“She was not sexually assaulted either. It appears to be a case of suicide. The girl drowned to death. Investigation is being carried out to find if there was any foul play,” said a police official.
