Mining mafia attack police team in Noida

Some miscreants involved in illegal mining attacked police party in Noida’s Sector 39 on Tuesday night leaving half a dozen policemen with minor injuries.

Acting on a tip-off about illegal sand extraction in Asgarpur area of Sector 39, the police team raided the area. When the team reached the spot, the miscreants opened fire and pelted the police with stones.

Police also fired several rounds in retaliation. After brief exchange of fire, the miscreants fled the spot leaving four tractors, two dumpers and excavation machines.  “A case has been registered against 18 people at Sector 18 police station. Manhunts are on to arrest the absconding miscreants,” said a senior police official of Noida.

It may be noted that illegal mining is rampant in the region despite local authorities’ crack down in the region. Due to strong nexus between politicians and mining mafia, administration could not initiate strong action against illegal activities.

The UP Government had suspended SDM of Greater Noida, Durga Shakti Nagpal, for taking on mining mafia. It was said that the Government took the decision to please the mining people active in the region.
