Milking the consumer?

Dairy major Amul has increased milk prices in the Delhi-NCR region by Rs 2 a litre from Friday due to increase in cost of milk production. It is also considering raising prices in other parts of the country. Meanwhile, the largest milk supplier in the Capital, Mother Dairy, may also hike milk prices as it is keeping a close watch on its procurement costs.

“In recent past, there has been a substantial increase in raw material cost of cattle feed and labour costs, and this has led to increase in cost of milk production,” said Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which sells milk under the brand Amul.

“We have increased the milk prices by Rs 2 litre across all variants in Delhi-NCR region,” said GCMMF Managing Director RS Sodhi. He further said the company is also considering increasing milk prices in other markets, including Uttar Pradesh and Kolkata. last week, the company had increased milk prices in Gujarat and Mumbai, citing the same reason. Mother Dairy, the largest milk supplier in the Delhi-NCR region, said it is keeping a close watch on procurement costs, but did not specify whether it will hike prices or not.

After this recent increase, the Amul Diamond (premium) will now cost Rs 50 per litre from Rs 48 per litre earlier, while Amul Gold (full cream) price has been raised to Rs 48 per litre. Amul Taaza (toned) would now cost Rs 38 a litre. The price of Amul Slim ‘n’ Trim milk, which is available in 500 ml and lower volume pouches, has been increased to Rs 17 per half litre. Amul assured that benefits from recent price hike will be passed on to the farmers, not the middlemen.
