Milestone moment for generating green energy comes!

Aiming to generate solar power through rooftops of buildings and spare land under South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), the civic body on Monday inked an MoU with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The target is to generate 20 megawatts of solar power under the agreement in a period of two years.

Of the 20 MW, 10 MW power would be generated on roof tops of 400 buildings, including schools, while remaining on spare vacant land of the SDMC.

The agency will implement grid connected roof top solar PV projects on the roofs of its buildings/offices as well as ground mounted Solar PV Systems as a part of its renewable energy initiatives. Today it moved a step forward to generate 20MW solar power. Both parties have agreed to collaborate, identify and develop potential sites for execution of Solar Power Projects.

SDMC Commissioner PK Goel stated that the expenditure to be made by the SDMC will be recovered over time with the savings in electricity bill and by selling excess power.

“Initially the solar power generation will be taken up on nearly 400 municipal buildings including schools, community halls, M&CW Centers etc.  The whole solar electricity generated on roof top will be used for the MCD offices whereas the whole of the solar energy generated on the spare vacant land will be sold to the DISCOMs.  The SDMC will also be benefited by availing the achievement linked incentive scheme launched recently by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy offers up to 25 per cent incentive on standard project cost in case 100 per cent target is achieved.

The project will help in curbing pollution as coal based thermal generation will be restricted,” he said. SDMC Mayor Shyam Sharma said, “This as a project of importance which will go a long way in generating green energy and sell the excess generated power to the DISCOMs. The project is in tune with the solar mission launched by Prime Minister Narender Modi.  The commissioning of the project will benefit the SDMC by substantial amount per annum as there will be huge saving on electricity bill.  Further the dependence on the power distributer DISCOMs will be eliminated.”
